Imperial Majesty Obi Austin Ndigwe, the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, has declared that he is willing to go to jail for the people who elected him.
In a video posted on social media, filmed in what appears to be a village square, Ndigwe explained that he was crowned by the Awka people as their Obi and not as a ruler of Anambra State. He stated that he would not relinquish the position his people have bestowed upon him.
A recent enquiry panel established by Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has released a report asserting that Obi Gibson Nwosu is the only legitimately crowned monarch of the kingdom.
Last week, members of the Ozo Society of Awka Kingdom visited Soludo at the Government House, where the governor discussed a central palace for Awka monarchs.
Soludo reiterated that there is no need for a dispute, emphasizing that the only government‑recognized monarch of Awka Kingdom is Obi Gibson Nwosu. He warned that if Ndigwe continues to present himself as the monarch, he could face imprisonment.
In the trending video, Ndigwe appeared to challenge Soludo, saying that he was prepared to go to jail if necessary. He added, “I don’t have a problem with anybody. What you people crowned me is King of Awka Kingdom. My people duly crowned me the Obi of Awka Kingdom, and I will not shy away from it.”
He continued, “If performing the function given to me by my people is what would make me go to jail, I’m ready for it.”
By asserting that he is a monarch of Awka and not of Anambra, Ndigwe subtly urged the governor to stay out of the matter.
The remarks, made in the village square, were met with loud applause from his supporters.
The video has sparked extensive discussion online, with some commentators questioning why Soludo has not taken action against Ndigwe, while others have urged the governor to allow him to serve his people peacefully after their election.
