Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secured a decisive win in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary held in Sokoto State on Monday, receiving 69,431 votes and defeating his nearest rivals by a wide margin.
The outcome was formally announced at the ADC State Secretariat in Sokoto by the Returning Officer, Professor Aminu Abubakar Illela, in front of party leaders, delegates and other key stakeholders from across the state.
Prof. Illela declared that Atiku had emerged victorious after obtaining 69,431 votes from the delegates who participated in the primary conducted throughout the state.
He added that former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi received 292 votes, while businessman and economist Mohammed Hayatu‑Deen garnered 319 votes.
The returning officer described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and credible, praising delegates and party officials for their orderly conduct during the process.
“With the powers conferred on me as the Returning Officer for this election, I hereby declare Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the winner of the Sokoto State ADC presidential primary election, having scored the highest number of valid votes cast,” Prof. Illela announced.
The declaration sparked jubilant reactions among party supporters and loyalists who gathered at the secretariat, chanting solidarity songs and expressing confidence that the former vice president remains the most formidable opposition figure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party stakeholders who spoke shortly after the announcement said the result reflected the confidence placed in Atiku’s leadership, political experience and commitment to national unity.
They argued that the overwhelming support in Sokoto State signals growing momentum for the ADC ahead of the next presidential contest, noting that Nigerians are looking for competent and experienced leadership capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
The primary election was monitored by INEC, party officials and observers, with ADC leaders in the state describing the exercise as a major step toward consolidating internal democracy and strengthening the party’s national outlook ahead of 2027.
