Favour Ashe, a medal contender for Nigeria, was disqualified after a false start in the men’s 100 m at the African Athletics Championships in Ghana.

Running in heat 2, Ashe completed the race before officials ruled the start illegal.

Both Ashe and a Cameroonian competitor failed to hear the umpire’s recall signal; each returned to the starting blocks and was subsequently disqualified.

Miracle Ezechukwu and Tejiri Ugoh are making their senior African Championships debut.

Ezechukwu won her heat comfortably, securing a place in the 100 m semifinals, while Ugoh placed third in a heat won by Cameroon’s Heverge Etame.

In the women’s 100 m heat 2, Rosemary Chukwuma delivered a controlled performance, crossing the line in 11.44 seconds.
