The Nigerian Army has detained a soldier after an accidental shooting injured a fellow serviceman at a military post in Borno State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported on X that military sources said the incident involved a member of the Army’s 25 Brigade and occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on June 20 at Sierra 7, a defensive position in Damboa Local Government Area.
According to the sources, the soldier inadvertently discharged his weapon while inside the position, causing a gunshot wound to a comrade.
“According to the sources, the soldier negligently discharged his weapon while within the military position, resulting in a gunshot wound to a fellow soldier,” Makama wrote.
The wounded soldier received immediate medical care and was later evacuated to a field ambulance facility for further treatment.
Military officials said the soldier who fired the weapon was quickly disarmed and taken into custody.
He remains detained pending further investigation and possible disciplinary action.
The Army reiterated that all personnel must strictly follow weapons‑handling procedures and safety protocols to avoid similar incidents.
Adherence to safety measures is deemed essential for protecting troops and preventing avoidable accidents during operations.
Investigators have begun probing the circumstances that led to the accidental discharge.
