Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has warned about the country’s security situation.
The warning followed Dalung’s sharing of a video showing heavily armed bandits traveling freely on a highway and greeting security personnel without interference.
He posted the video on his Facebook page.
Dalung described the scene as a heartbreaking reality that illustrates how deeply entrenched criminal activity has become in Nigeria.
The incident followed a rise in insecurity nationwide, including the kidnapping of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State, on May 15, during which a teacher was killed.
Dalung wrote: “This country is in a very dire situation. Seeing bandits move openly on highways in large numbers on motorcycles, heavily armed, while security personnel stationed along the same roads can do little more than exchange greetings with one another is heartbreaking and unbelievable!”
“And no, I am not referring to the security operatives who are doing their best to confront these bandits, but to the apparent normalization and entrenchment of banditry in Nigeria. The question now is: what is left for the ordinary citizen?”
