Argentine footballer’s wife and two children found dead after Venezuela earthquakes

Venezuelan second‑division club player Lucas Trejo, an Argentine national, lost his wife and two children in last week’s earthquakes, the most powerful to strike Venezuela in over a century, CNN reported.

Trejo, a member of Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, spent the previous three days searching through debris for any trace of his wife Yanina and their children Aarón and Ainhoa.

According to CNN Español on Friday, Trejo’s brother‑in‑law Ricardo Ardiles said the player was “emotionally overwhelmed” and that “absolutely nothing” remained of the family’s beachfront house in La Guaira, one of the hardest‑hit zones.

Authorities announced on Sunday that over 1,400 people had died and thousands more were missing in Venezuela.

Trejo, 38, was attending a training camp in Caracas when the twin earthquakes occurred, CNN Español reported. He then hurried to his home in La Guaira, 18 miles north of the capital.

Ardiles described the scene as horrific. “He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been. Our hope is that they weren’t in there.”

Trejo combed through debris and searched for clues, calling for assistance that would need heavy machinery, CNN Español said.

Friends and teammates released a video urging the provision of additional machinery.

“Right now we only have one machine, but it’s not enough,” said Robert García, a player for Metropolitanos F.C. of Venezuela.
