Argentina hopes Lionel Messi will be fit for the start of the 2026 World Cup after he sustained muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
The 39‑year‑old suffered the injury while playing for Inter Miami in a match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
Messi was forced to leave the field in the 73rd minute.
A club statement read: “After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”
Argentina will compete in Group J at the World Cup, facing Algeria, Austria and Jordan. Prior to the tournament, the national team will play friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
