Renewed Hope for the Elderly, a political advocacy group, has begun a nationwide mobilization effort to secure roughly 24 million votes for President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election by encouraging elderly Nigerians to support his administration’s senior‑citizen policies.
During the movement’s inauguration in Abuja, its Director‑General, Dr. Bode Olaonipekun, explained that the initiative was created to advance the dignity, welfare, and political participation of elderly Nigerians while backing President Tinubu’s second‑term campaign.
He characterized the campaign as a declaration of social inclusion and protection, noting that older Nigerians have long endured neglect, insufficient healthcare, fragile social welfare, and economic hardship after retirement, even though they have contributed to national development.
He added, “Our elderly men and women form the foundation upon which this nation stands. A nation that fails to honor its elderly gradually erodes its own moral foundation.”
The Director‑General praised the Tinubu administration for bolstering the National Senior Citizens Centre and expressed confidence that ongoing reforms will enhance pension administration, healthcare delivery, and retirees’ welfare.
He added that the group backs plans to broaden geriatric healthcare access, establish elderly support centres, strengthen community‑based care systems, and improve financial inclusion and digital literacy for senior citizens.
He also commended First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for initiatives that promote gardening, subsistence farming, and environmentally friendly activities among senior citizens, calling them programmes that foster active ageing, boost food security, and enhance physical and mental well‑being.
