The Forum of Progressive Speakers of State Legislatures, affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), praised the Senate’s passage of the State Police Bill, calling it a significant milestone in Nigeria’s push to bolster internal security and promote community‑based policing.

The statement, signed by the forum’s chair, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, made this announcement.

He noted that the legislation marks a historic shift in the nation’s security architecture and will enable states to address security challenges more effectively.

Dangyatin described the bill’s enactment as a triumph for effective governance and grassroots security management.

He added that the long‑standing call for a policing structure attuned to local realities and specific security concerns has finally been legislatively endorsed.

“The passage of this bill is a resounding victory for effective governance and community‑focused policing. For years, the clamour for a security structure that understands the local terrain has been loud. With this enactment, we are empowering states to better protect their people, respond swiftly to security threats, and foster closer collaboration between citizens and law enforcement,” he said.

The forum pledged full support for the law’s successful implementation, assuring Nigerians that APC‑controlled State Houses of Assembly will expedite ratification and establish legal frameworks tailored to each state’s security needs.

It also committed to establishing effective oversight mechanisms to guarantee that state police operations adhere to professionalism, respect for human rights, and the rule of law.

Furthermore, the forum stated it would work closely with state governments to secure adequate funding for recruitment, training, equipment, and welfare of state police personnel.

The speakers thanked the leadership of the National Assembly, the executive arm of government, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the bill’s passage.

They expressed confidence that establishing state police will curb crime, enhance public safety, and foster an environment conducive to economic growth and development nationwide.
