Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Zamfara North senatorial seat, has filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Gusau. The suit challenges the conduct and result of the party’s recent senatorial primary election.
Shinkafi is requesting that the court order the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC to explain alleged breaches of the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution that he claims occurred during the primaries.
Barrister Garba Galadi, Shinkafi’s lawyer, told reporters after the suit was filed on Monday evening that the action was necessary because the party apparently failed to follow its own guidelines for conducting primaries.
Galadi noted that the APC’s rules allow for either direct primaries or consensus arrangements. He alleged that neither method was properly observed in the exercise that produced the party’s candidate.
He further contended that the declaration of Senator Sahabi Yau Kaura as the primary winner was invalid, arguing that it was carried out “without due process and in violation of laid‑down procedures.”
The legal team plans to present evidence to the court showing that the electoral guidelines and internal party regulations were not complied with during the selection process.
Shinkafi said he decided to pursue the case after exhausting all internal party mechanisms without success. He rejected the legitimacy of the party’s candidate, asserting that the process that produced Senator Kaura did not meet the due‑process requirements of the APC constitution and applicable electoral laws.
He added that seeking judicial intervention was a step toward ensuring justice, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles within the party.
