The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State has clarified why Governor Siminalayi Fubara abandoned his bid for a second term.

The party emphasized that Nyesome Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is not a member of the APC and had no involvement in the decision about the governor’s ambitions.

Chibuike Ikenga, the APC Publicity Secretary for Rivers State, told Arise News that the choice was made by party members in the state’s interest.

He said, “Though he [Wike] is a very serious colossus in Rivers State and Nigeria at large, he doesn’t influence what happens in Rivers State.”

“We the members of APC discussed and took our decision solely on an agreement we had to chart another course; that is why the governor took that step for the interest of peace and progress of the state.”

Daily Post reported that Governor Fubara said he has been under intense pressure to decide before the party’s governorship primaries.

He added that not everything that has transpired during the APC primaries in the state can be articulated by him.

Fubara’s tenure as governor has been marked by challenges, especially his conflict with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike, a member of the PDP who effectively controls the structures of both the APC and PDP in Rivers, has asserted that Fubara will never return as governor for a second term.
