Chief Ikeje Asogwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, won the by‑election held on 20 June 2026 for the Enugu North Senatorial District.
Asogwa received 162,360 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Chief Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 9,299 votes.
The by‑election was organized to fill the vacancy left by the late Senator Okey Ezea, who represented the district until his death on 18 November 2025 at the age of 62.
On Sunday in Nsukka, the Returning Officer, Prof. Christian Ezeibe—Dean of the Department of Student Affairs at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN)—announced the results, stating that Asogwa had achieved the highest vote count and was declared the winner.
“Asogwa has satisfied the legal requirements of this election and is hereby declared the winner and is returned,” he said. “I thank you all for your cooperation, support and maturity that made the by‑election a success.”
According to Ezeibe, the Enugu North Senatorial District had 727,340 registered voters, of whom 184,094 were accredited to vote.
The results for the other five candidates were as follows: Chika Idoko Emmanuel of the African Democratic Party (ADC) received 1,676 votes; Kingsley Aneke of the Boot Party (BP) received 1,607 votes; Ejike Simon Eze of the Labour Party (LP) received 1,027 votes; OssElias Okwudiri Ossai of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) received 3,129 votes; and Charles Ugochukwu of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) received 667 votes.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected senator, Asogwa, said the result reflected the overwhelming support of the residents of the six local government areas that comprise the Enugu North Senatorial Zone.
He pledged to provide quality and effective representation to the zone, thereby honoring the confidence and support expressed by voters through their ballots.
