In Kano State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to govern the state indirectly after his son, Mustapha Kwankwaso, was announced as the National Democratic Convention (NDC) deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

The claim follows the NDC’s announcement that Mustapha Kwankwaso would serve as the running mate to its gubernatorial candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, in the upcoming 2027 elections.

Mustapha previously held the position of Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, but he resigned together with three other commissioners after the governor switched allegiance to the APC.

Kano APC chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa responded to the nomination by saying the party was unsurprised, claiming it demonstrated Kwankwaso’s enduring desire to maintain influence over Kano’s leadership.

Doguwa stated, “APC is not surprised by the nomination of Kwankwaso’s son Mustapha as running mate to Aminu Abdussalam in the NDC. In fact, APC expects more from Kwankwaso. Those of us close to him know that he has pursued every possible avenue to secure a third term in office.”

He added that the former governor had previously sought legal means to extend his tenure beyond constitutional limits, and that nominating his son was another step toward that objective.

Doguwa said, “Imposing his biological son as deputy governor is a chance to further the plan. With more opportunities, Kwankwaso will go beyond this.”

The APC chairman also rebuffed claims that the party was worried about the situation, asserting that the ruling party remains confident as the 2027 elections approach.

Meanwhile, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has pledged to regain control of Kano after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defected to the APC, a move that Kwankwaso has called a betrayal.
