The senatorial aspirant for Abia Central District from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, has been among the pastors arrested and arraigned by the Anambra State government on accusations of staging fake prophecies and miracles.
Nwankpa, an Abia native and Bishop of a Pentecostal church based in Onitsha, was brought before the Anambra High Court in Awka together with seven other Christian clerics who are alleged to have performed fraudulent miracles.
In response to the arrests, Bishop Nwankpa’s media aide, Stanley Nduagu, denounced the actions of the Anambra State government, asserting that Nwankpa has not engaged in any fake activities during his more than 25 years of ministry.
He added that the accusations against Nwankpa are unsupported by evidence.
Members of Nwankpa’s community in Isiala Ngwa, Abia State, have also expressed concern over his detention, urging his immediate release.
One resident of Isiala Ngwa, Ngozi Ahunanya, accused the Anambra State government of targeting Christians and traditional religious practitioners.
Similarly, Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for the House of Assembly in the Arochukwu constituency, condemned the arrest of Emeka Nwankpa, describing it as unwarranted harassment of Christian clerics and worshippers.
