The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its House of Representatives primary for Ward C1 in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, on Saturday. The vote was interrupted after party members clashed over who should be the candidate.
The two aspirants in the contest are Mr. Ganiyu Ayuba and Mrs. Adebisi Adebajo.
Disagreements intensified in the afternoon when Alimosho Local Government Chairman Mr. Akintunde Johnson arrived at the venue. Supporters of the different candidates began chanting for their preferred aspirant, and Johnson was widely suspected of backing one of the contestants.
The situation quickly escalated, leading to confusion and the dispersal of party members from the site. As a result, the primary could not continue.
Mr. Tosin Fatoki, the former APC Chairman in Alimosho, explained that the division among party faithful made it impossible to hold the election in the ward.
“The primaries will no longer hold at this ward, with the intense division among party faithful on their preferred candidate,” he said. “At the arrival of the Alimosho LGA chairman, you can observe upheaval among the erstwhile patient party members. With this upheaval, a lot of them have been dispersed, so no primaries can hold here today,” he added.
Another party member accused the council chairman of attempting to influence the outcome through intimidation.
“They think because they are in power, they can influence the party members’ choice of candidate, but we won’t let it happen. It is because of this intimidation that there will be no election in this ward. As you can see, the people have already been dispersed,” the member said.
