Osun State police and other security agencies received 30 operational patrol vehicles as part of a state‑wide effort to bolster security.

The vehicles were handed over by Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, factional Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Osun State Chapter, during a ceremony at the Police Headquarters in Osogbo on Sunday.

During the donation, Abiodun reaffirmed the commitment of local government councils to protect lives and property and to promote peace and stability in their communities.

He described the initiative as evidence of local governments’ resolve to support security agencies in fighting crime and advancing grassroots development.

“Security is the foundation for meaningful development,” Abiodun said, adding that no society can thrive in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.

He noted that local governments, being the closest tier of government to the people, understand the unique security challenges facing communities and are committed to providing the logistics and resources that security agencies need.

Abiodun praised the state’s security operatives for their efforts in combating criminal activity, especially for their swift intervention in a recent kidnapping incident in Ora town, Ifedayo Local Government Area, which led to the rescue of the victims.

He said the prompt response prevented the incident from escalating into a wider security threat in the state.

The chairman also recalled the killing of former council chairman Hon. Remi Abbas during the crisis that followed the February 10, 2025 Appeal Court judgment, which allowed elected local government officials to resume office.

He warned that such incidents must not recur, particularly with the upcoming governorship election and other political activities in the state.

Abiodun attributed the success of the intervention to the growing autonomy of local governments, noting that financial and administrative independence has enabled councils to respond swiftly to pressing community challenges.

He explained that the patrol vehicles will improve mobility, shorten response times and strengthen proactive policing across Osun State.

The chairman disclosed that roughly 90 security patrol vehicles and other equipment have been procured and will be distributed to security agencies in batches before the end of May.

He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the realization of local government autonomy, describing the development as beneficial to grassroots governance and community development.

Abiodun also commended security agencies, fellow council chairmen and Elizade Motors for their support of the initiative.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid crime prevention.

The chairman further appealed to local government career officers to avoid partisan politics and to cooperate with local government administrations.

He assured workers and retirees that councils remain committed to improving their welfare and to ensuring prompt payment of salaries and entitlements.

Abiodun reiterated the commitment of Osun State local government chairmen to programmes and initiatives that will continue to promote security, peace and sustainable development at the grassroots.

Speaking on behalf of other security agencies, Osun State Commissioner of Police Mr. Ibrahim Gotan assured that the vehicles would be used effectively to enhance security operations and patrol activities across the state.

Gotan commended the donor and called on spirited individuals, philanthropists, organisations and institutions to emulate the gesture by supporting security agencies for improved performance and lasting peace in the state.
