The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn into Group L for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, alongside Madagascar, Guinea‑Bissau and Tanzania.
The draw took place on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt, and it has set up a competitive campaign for the three‑time African champions.
Nigeria find themselves in a familiar group, as all three opponents have faced the Super Eagles in recent CAF competitions.
Guinea‑Bissau met Nigeria in the group stage of the 2021 AFCON, and both sides were again drawn together during the qualifiers and group phase of the 2023 edition held in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Super Eagles also faced Tanzania in their opening group match of the 2025 AFCON, a game Nigeria won 2–1. Madagascar, meanwhile, handed Nigeria a 2–0 defeat in the group stage of the 2019 tournament.
For the 2027 qualification format, Tanzania—one of the co‑hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda—will automatically qualify from Group L regardless of their finishing position. Only one additional team from the group will join them at the finals.
Across the other groups, 11 additional pools were drawn, with the top two teams from each group securing qualification to form the 24‑team lineup for the tournament, scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
The qualification matches will begin between September 21 and October 6, 2026. Matchdays three and four are set for November 9–17, 2026, while the final round of fixtures will be played between March 22 and 30, 2027.
Nigeria, who finished third at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, remain one of Africa’s most successful sides with three continental titles, the last of which came in 2013.
