The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ogun State declared Senator Solomon Adeola the winner of its governorship primary held on Thursday.

Known as “Yayi,” Adeola received 304,055 votes, while his opponent, Mr. Abayomi Hunye, received none.

Hunye had entered the race on the APC platform even though the party had largely endorsed Adeola as its consensus candidate, a decision supported by most APC aspirants and leaders, including Governor Dapo Abiodun.

According to DAILY POST, Hunye participated in the primary at his ward in Tube, Ipokia local government, where the exercise attracted a large and peaceful turnout.

After casting his ballot, Hunye addressed journalists, denying any claims of disqualification and asserting that the crowd at his ward demonstrated his popularity in the state. He also urged President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abiodun to ensure the votes were counted impartially.

During the announcement at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, Mr. Wale Ohu, stated that the APC had 343,292 registered voters, 305,287 of whom were accredited, and that Adeola had secured 304,055 votes.

“There were two contestants. Senator Solomon Adeola scored 304,055 votes while Mr. Abayomi Hunye polled zero,” Ohu declared. “With these results, I hereby announce that the winner of today’s contest is Senator Solomon Adeola, who will represent the party in the 2027 governorship election in the state.”

In his acceptance speech, Adeola pledged to build on Governor Abiodun’s achievements and to maintain peace and unity within the APC if elected governor in 2027.

He praised Governor Abiodun for ensuring a peaceful and seamless primary process, calling it unprecedented in the state’s political history.

“I never imagined or believed that the exercise would be this peaceful. I thought it was going to be one of those usual primaries where people struggle and fight,” Adeola said. “But by the special grace of God, you have demonstrated that nothing is impossible with God on our side. By the grace of God, on May 29, 2027, I will be sitting side by side with you for a smooth transition of government.”

He assured party members and residents of Ogun State that he would continue the developmental strides of the current administration and elevate the state to new heights.

Governor Abiodun described Adeola’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate for 2027 as a validation of the confidence placed in him by party members across the state.

He noted that the peaceful conduct of the primaries marked a historic moment in the state’s over 50‑year history.

“Some other states may take a day like this for granted, but here in Ogun State, where this is happening for the first time in the 50‑year history of the state, it is not a mean feat,” the governor added.
