ABUJA — On Thursday, the National Youth Wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) filed a petition with the National Judicial Council (NJC). The petition calls for Justice Peter Odo Lifu to be removed from any case involving the ADC and requests his dismissal from the bench on grounds of alleged misconduct.
The action follows a Federal High Court decision that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC and four other political parties. The youth wing said the ruling was politically motivated and posed a threat to democratic participation.
Speaking outside the ADC National Secretariat in Abuja, Comrade Ibrahim Garba Wala, acting on behalf of National Youth Leader Comrade Balarabe Rufai, explained that the group could not submit the petition in person at the NJC office because heavily armed security personnel had allegedly blocked access roads.
Instead, he handed excerpts of the petition to journalists, outlining the group’s demands.
“We demand the immediate, total removal of Hon. Justice Peter Odo Lifu from any and all adjudicatory matters, reviews, or decision‑making roles concerning the ADC. Furthermore, we explicitly demand that the National Judicial Council recommend his dismissal from the Nigerian judiciary,” the petition states.
The group alleges that Justice Lifu proceeded with the case despite a Court of Appeal order that stayed the proceedings, and claims the court ignored irregularities involving the plaintiffs.
It also contends that repeated complaints against the judge are eroding public confidence in the judiciary and undermining democratic processes.
In a strongly worded statement, the youth wing declared, “The ballot box belongs to us, and we will not allow any court to rob us of our political expression.”
The group said it would continue its protest until the NJC acts on its demands.
