ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction headed by its 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, has chosen him as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
Elias Adikwu, Chairman of the Electoral Committee and Benue State party chairman, announced Kachikwu’s adoption, which was subsequently ratified by delegates at the ADC National Convention held on Sunday at A-Class, Abuja.
Alhaji Abdulkadir Mohammed Bashir, the newly elected National Chairman of the party, presented Kachikwu with the party’s flag, symbolising his mandate to lead the party in the upcoming election.
During the convention, Bashir and other newly elected members of the National Working Committee (NWC) were also sworn in.
The new NWC members include: Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman – Kingsley Oggah (NC); Deputy National Chairman – Johnny Tovie Derek (SS); National Secretary – Kennedy O. Odion; National Treasurer – Dr. Joe Aroh (SS); National Financial Secretary – Chief Amirigoye (SW); and National Publicity Secretary – [Insert Name] (SW).
Additional appointments were National Legal Adviser – Dr. Chris Ugwu (SE); National Organising Secretary – Elias Adikwu (NC); and National Chief Whip – Patrick Ambut (NW).
Previously, the Senator David Mark-led ADC held its national convention in Abuja on 14 April 2026. Despite internal disputes, litigation, and venue controversies, delegates amended the party’s constitution and elected the former Senate President as the substantive National Chairman.
At that convention, over 1,000 delegates reportedly voted to ratify amendments to the ADC constitution and confirm Senator Mark as the substantive leader of the NWC.
The Mark-led faction also expelled factional chairman Nafiu Bala, along with Rep. Leke Abejide and other members, citing anti‑party activities for taking internal disputes to court.
The convention attracted major political figures across party lines, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
