Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Abuja‑based businesswoman Mrs. Anita Job to 27 years in prison for drug trafficking in the Federal Capital Territory.
The mother of three was found guilty on Friday of two counts of drug dealing brought by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Justice Yilwa imposed a 12‑year term for the first count and a 15‑year term for the second. Because the defendant showed remorse, was a first‑time offender, and admitted guilt without delaying the court, the judge ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning Mrs. Job will serve a total of 15 years.
While acknowledging her remorse, the judge stressed that drug crimes must not be treated lightly due to their impact on the nation and the international community. He was particularly concerned that the woman was found in possession of 250 kilograms of illicit drugs, a commercial quantity.
Mrs. Job’s lawyer, Barrister D. I. Badams, urged the judge to exercise mercy, citing the defendant’s pledge not to return to drug trafficking.
