The Abia State Government has launched the state’s Strategy for Integrity, Accountability and Anti-Corruption Steering Committee, directing its members to begin implementing the anti‑corruption framework immediately.
According to the government, the committee was created to enhance transparency, accountability and good governance throughout the state’s public sector.
During the inauguration in Umuahia on Wednesday, Abia State Head of Service Mr. Benson Ojeikere tasked the committee with ensuring integrity and accountability across the public service.
Ojeikere emphasized that members must provide policy guidance, monitor progress, address emerging challenges, and guarantee the committee’s objectives are met.
In his remarks, Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN, represented by Abia State Solicitor‑General and Permanent Secretary Paul Ogubunka, described corruption as a major challenge facing the public service nationwide.
Earlier, Abia State Programme Coordinator for the Rule of Law and Anti‑Corruption (RoLAC) Programme Mr. Peter Omenka said the steering committee would work with anti‑corruption agencies, civil society organisations, ministries and MDAs to advance Abia State’s anti‑corruption efforts.
He added that the programme aims to strengthen the rule of law, improve access to justice for women, children and persons with disabilities, and promote transparency and accountability in state government institutions.
