Abia State government has urged the electricity generation and distribution companies operating in the state to act transparently and fairly toward consumers and other investors.

State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities Ikechukwu Monday made the remarks on Thursday during a public consultation on draft regulations organized by the Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority (ASERA) for consumers and other stakeholders.

Monday, who said that a customer is the king in an economy, added that customers deserve quality, transparent and fair services.

He explained that the public consultation, which was organized to gather feedback from consumers, will help ASERA achieve the objectives of the Abia State government in the electricity sector, including the resolution of customer complaints.

“And like they say, the customer is the king, so it’s not just the key player, but the customer is a very critical stakeholder,” Monday stated.

He noted that 120,000 electricity meters have been deployed to power consumers in Aba ring‑fenced areas in the past six months by Aba Power and Geometric, assuring that the Abia State government intends to replicate the effort in the remaining parts of the state.

In his remarks, ASERA Chairman Emeka Onyegbule said the public consultation was designed to engage consumers and stakeholders in developing a working document.

He maintained that the agency, which took over power regulation functions from the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) in 2025, will ensure that consumers and other investors are not cheated.

Speaking at the event, a senior staff member of Aba Power, Emeka Victor Ngwoke, lamented the ongoing vandalism of his company’s property by criminals and appealed to the Abia State government to establish a special court to try and jail arrested offenders.
