Abia Assembly to Invite Security Chiefs to Discuss Kidnappings and Other Security Breaches

The Abia State House of Assembly has decided to summon the state’s security chiefs for a crucial meeting to address the escalating security problems, especially the rise in kidnappings across the state.

The resolution was adopted unanimously during the plenary session on Tuesday.

It followed a motion titled “a matter of urgent public importance” presented by Deputy Speaker Augustine Okezie Mmeregini. The motion cited the kidnapping of Mr. Dennis Okechi Izuchukwu and Mrs. Onyiyechi Ekechukwu in the Umuawa, Alaocha community of Ohuhu, Umuahia North LGA, by suspected gunmen.

Deputy Speaker Mmeregini described the situation as an “insurgency of kidnapping and other vices” in Abia State and urged the House to pressure the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and other state security agencies to intensify efforts to protect the lives and property of residents.

He also requested that the Mayors of the state’s 17 local government areas reactivate and strengthen community vigilance groups within their jurisdictions. Additionally, he encouraged Mayors to urge traditional rulers and Presidents-General of local communities to remain vigilant in their areas.

Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, who presided over the session, emphasized the seriousness of the security concerns raised. The House endorsed the Deputy Speaker’s requests and resolved to invite the state’s security chiefs for an interface.
