Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, has expelled 27 students from its College of Medicine for alleged examination misconduct and impersonation.
The students, who were mainly enrolled in Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Medicine and Surgery, were suspended for a period of two to four semesters.
They were at the 300, 400 and 500 levels of the university.
Mrs. Oluwayomi, the registrar, said the expulsions were carried out after the Mobile Disciplinary Committee of the College of Medicine approved its recommendations for the 2024/2025 academic year.
According to a statement released in Benin City by Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations, 31 students were accused, 27 of whom were expelled for two or four semesters while four were cleared of the charges.
Of the expelled, 14 were from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, one of whom was cleared. Ten were from the Department of Anatomy, three of whom were cleared. One student from Nursing, three from Human Physiology, and three from Medicine and Surgery were also expelled.
The university announced that the expulsions would take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session and that the affected students would be barred from all examinations until their suspension period was completed.
In addition, some students were prohibited from sitting for both internal and external exams during the penalty period and thereafter. For certain students, their course progression was halted, and the results of one student would not be calculated until the suspension was finished.
After exonerating one student, the university also ordered that his mobile phone be returned to him.
