As the All Progressives Congress (APC) gears up for the 2027 general elections, 91 candidates are slated to compete in the party’s House of Representatives primaries in Lagos State, scheduled for Friday.
All of the aspirants have cleared the APC’s screening committee and will vie for the party’s 24 House of Representatives slots that cover the state’s 245 wards, unless last‑minute changes occur.
The field includes current legislators, former members of the national House of Representatives, ex‑members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, former local government chairmen, and prominent party figures.
Because of the large number of contenders, direct primaries are expected to be held in most wards to select the APC’s candidates for the 2027 elections.
APC Lagos Chairman Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi has announced that direct primaries will be the preferred method of selection, while also encouraging consensus arrangements where aspirants agree to step aside voluntarily.
Although some constituencies reached consensus, several aspirants refused to withdraw after party leaders urged them to do so, leading to highly contested primaries in many areas.
Three candidates are projected to win unopposed if no last‑minute changes occur: Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa in Agege Federal Constituency, incumbent lawmaker Fuad Laguda in Surulere I, and Benjamin Olabinjo in Ifako‑Ijaiye.
In Ikeja Federal Constituency, state convener of the Renewed Hope Network Rt. Hon. James Faleke is expected to face Olufunke Hassan.
Hon. Jimi Benson, who has represented Ikorodu Federal Constituency since 2015, will contest against Olugbenga Shittu.
In Ajeromi‑Ifelodun, incumbent lawmaker Paul Kalejaiye will battle former federal lawmaker Kolawole Taiwo.
Mushin Constituency II is likely to see a competitive race, with former Lagos commissioner and former APC spokesperson Mogaji Seye Oladejo challenging incumbent Hon. Toyin Fayinka.
In Mushin I, incumbent lawmaker Adeyemi Alli will compete against Adeleke Opeodu and Madina Sanusi.
Oshodi‑Isolo presents one of the most intense contests, with 16 aspirants competing for two House of Representatives seats.
For Oshodi‑Isolo I, former council chairmen Afeez Ipesa‑Balogun and Bolaji Ariyoh, Nollywood actress Foluke Daramola‑Salako, and several others are among the contenders.
In Oshodi‑Isolo II, the race includes Dr. Olayinka AbdulRasheed Alausa, nephew of Nigeria’s Minister of Education, former lawmaker Ganiyu Johnson, former commissioner Kehinde Bamigbetan, and other aspirants.
Ten candidates are also contesting the two Lagos Island constituencies, including caucus chairman Dolapo Badru and former federal lawmaker Ibrahim Obanikoro.
Other constituencies expected to host vigorous contests include Lagos Mainland, Alimosho, Somolu, Kosofe, Epe, Amuwo‑Odofin, Eti‑Osa, and Apapa, where several incumbents face strong opposition from fellow party members.
