ABUJA — Twenty‑three state chairmen of the Accord Party have endorsed Dr. Gbenga Olawepo‑Hashim as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, asserting that the primary that selected him was legitimate and reflected the will of party members.
The endorsement comes amid internal disputes over the conduct and outcome of the party’s presidential primaries, with the chairmen uniting behind his candidacy ahead of the 2027 election.
In a joint statement signed by Oladeji Oluwatosin and Jamilu Mohammed, chairmen of the Accord Party in Lagos and Kaduna states respectively, on behalf of their colleagues, the group said its position followed extensive consultations and a collective acceptance of the primary outcome.
“The forum maintains that Gbenga Olawepo‑Hashim’s emergence represents the legitimate outcome of a democratic process,” the chairmen said.
The chairmen called on all stakeholders in the party to uphold unity, discipline and respect for its internal democratic structures.
They said their support was informed by what they described as Olawepo‑Hashim’s credentials, ideological convictions and capacity to tackle Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
“He is a unifying figure with the capacity to address Nigeria’s pressing economic and security challenges, given his ideological grounding, democratic credentials and long‑standing involvement in pro‑democracy struggles,” they said.
The chairmen also highlighted his proposed $4 trillion economic blueprint as a key part of the case for his candidacy.
They said the plan focuses on industrialisation, energy expansion, job creation and the unlocking of stranded national assets, which they believe can help drive national transformation.
“We urge party members and supporters to close ranks and rally behind what represents a credible opportunity for the Accord Party to present a strong, disciplined and competitive alternative in 2027,” the statement added.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, several state chairmen who were unable to attend the gathering in Abuja also conveyed their support for the position through consultations, broadening backing for the candidate across the party’s state chapters.
The initiative, the sources said, was spearheaded by the Lagos and Kaduna State chairmen and is understood to enjoy the support of a majority of members of the National Working Committee.
