The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has clarified why it selected former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

During an interview on Trust TV on Wednesday, the party’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba‑Ahmed, explained that Duke represents a decisive shift from the past to the future.

Baba‑Ahmed said, “Donald Duke is an excellent candidate among all presidential aspirants.”

He added, “He joined the party like many others, drawn by our principles and ideology. He approached us independently and asked if he could acquire a nomination form, which we gladly provided.”

According to the chairman, Duke met all the criteria required to compete against other candidates. “Three individuals expressed interest in the ticket, all from the southern part of the country,” he noted.

“Interestingly, none of the candidates came from the North. If a northerner had approached us for a nomination form and won, he would carry our flag,” Baba‑Ahmed said.

“In the PRP, we do not allow a divisive North‑South split that limits participation to one region or the other. This time, it is the southerners who are contesting, not the northerners.”
