Kenneth Okonkwo, a senior figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warned that voters who support the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi could inadvertently aid President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election bid in 2027. Okonkwo made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV on Wednesday.
He argued that Nigeria’s opposition must consolidate around a single platform to realistically challenge the incumbent. “If you split the votes of the coalition and the opposition, you’re still making Tinubu better placed to win,” Okonkwo said. “Either you’re working for Tinubu directly, in other words, you’re in APC, or you’re working for Tinubu indirectly because when you divide the votes, you’re still helping Tinubu.”
Okonkwo also criticized Obi’s reported withdrawal from coalition talks within the ADC, claiming that the former Labour Party candidate had declined to participate in a competitive primary. “Nobody forced Peter Obi to enter ADC. He entered on his own, and one week before the deadline he left and gave the reason. You can’t compete in a primary, and you want to be a politician. You want to be the president of a challenged country, and you’re running away from challenge,” he said.
The former Labour Party spokesperson added that Senator Victor Umeh had previously suggested a political alliance between South‑East and northern interests as the most viable path to the presidency. Okonkwo said Umeh told him that Obi was reluctant to accept such advice. “I told him, ‘Have you told Obi?’ He said yes, but that Peter Obi is very stubborn. If you tell him anything, he would not believe but would continue to try,” Okonkwo claimed.
He urged opposition supporters to consider their choices carefully, stating, “Let me tell you the truth, in 2027, anybody voting for Peter Obi is voting for Tinubu, and don’t say that I didn’t tell you.”
