A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has rejected the notion that a single presidential term can resolve Nigeria’s challenges.

Sowunmi made the remarks during a TVC interview on Thursday, as the country approaches the 2027 general elections and several presidential hopefuls claim they can solve Nigeria’s problems within one term.

"Anyone who says one term is enough to address all the challenges that beset our nation is either a liar or a fraud," Sowunmi said. "They boast about how easy it is to accomplish a difficult task, yet they never explain how they intend to do it."

"The only person who seemed to convince us that it was possible was Goodluck Jonathan, who assumed office after Umaru Yar'Adua," he added. "He completed his legitimate term from 2011 to 2015. How easy was it for us to expect him to serve an additional term?"

"Forcing him to serve a second term, and the attempt to push him to complete two terms, ultimately weakened one of the major parties—a party that has not recovered to this day," Sowunmi concluded.
