Why Bleaching Is Bad For The Skin

Skin bleaching creams reduces the melanin in the body and causes a lot of damages to the the skin like redness, intense irritation, dark grey spots, skin cancer, acne, eczema, etc. Bleaching the skin does not get rid of the melanin permanently because the skin is constantly being renewed and included formation of new melanin by its producing cells known as melanocytes.

Bleaching the skin also causes internal and external effects due to the mercury in some products. It also causes skin pigmentation which builds up knuckles on the elbows, knees, fingers and toes, causing them to look darker and mismatched. The face becomes thinned around the eye and ear areas.

Some people use illegal ointments containing toxins like mercury, which is a metal that blocks production of the melanin, that gives the skin its colour. Bleaching agents causes burnings, itching, body odour and dryness. Some bleaching drugs like hydroquinone contain ingredients which have carcinogenic properties that can harm the skin.

The drugs may also increase cancer risks. When hydroquinone is used in doses higher than 2% or a period longer  than 3 months, the whole skin lightening will have negative effects even paradoxical results with higher concentrations of the drug.
